No medical referral is needed to book privately. Québec's public plan doesn't cover these services; private insurance often does — see the next section.

The receipt, field by field

The question that comes up most isn't the fee, it's “will my insurance accept it”. Here's the receipt handed out after each visit, and why each line is on it.

  • Your name, as it appears on the policyA receipt in a spouse's or parent's name is refused by most insurers, even when they're the one paying.
  • The date of service, not of paymentThat's what sets the coverage year. A December visit paid in January counts in December's year.
  • Exactly what the service was“Nutrition consultation” — not “advice”, not “coaching”. Insurers reimburse a professional service, not a general one.
  • The professional titleDietitian and nutritionist are titles protected by law in Québec. That word is what the insurer looks for on the receipt.
  • The Order licence numberIt lets the insurer confirm registration on the Order's roster. Without it, reimbursement is often held up pending a check.

This specimen shows what a receipt looks like; it is not a receipt. Coverage itself varies from one policy to the next — number of visits, percentage reimbursed, annual maximum. Three questions to ask your insurer before the first visit: are registered dietitian services covered, at what percentage, and up to what annual amount.

In the office or by video
